Lost gold mine

A lost gold mine within, ten kilometres of the city centre. Looking for somewhere to take the kids, on the cheap(maybe force some education on them, without them knowing of course!) Right, how do we get there. Pile everyone in the car, and head for Mount Coot-tha. The area is marked in the Ubd street directory, map 157, p13(gold mine picnic area.)              Car parking is easily accessible from Sir Sign showing distance to mine.       Samuel Griffith Scenic Drive. The picnic area has wood fired BBQ’s, tables, and some shade, no toilets though. The area is well maintained, with nice garden beds. A walking track leads off towards the mine area. The sign proclaims the gold mine’s name as “The Ghost Hole Mine”, I cannot find any reference to a mine by this name at  the department of mines.                                    The track towards the mine is slightly weather worn, from the heavy rains earlier in the year, but still easily negotiated.                    Photo on right shows mine sight map, including dam, well, pump house, mine car tracks, and abandoned mine shafts.            Photo below shows myself walking down the track towards the first observation area.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             Tried to line these two photos up beside each other, failed. Perhaps they are to large to sit besides each other.
Sorry, this is kind of sloppy, I still have my learners plates on. Photo on right, remains of mine car tracks at second observation area.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  On the left is the entrance to the “Ghost Hole” mine. The entrance is well filled with rocks and other debris. There is no chance of a small child getting lost inside. The opening   only goes back about a metre and a half.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         Photo on right, I believe to be the remains of the old pump house. Metal pipes lead into a basin in the creek, on the down hill side of the dam wall.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         The remains of another gold mine in the same area. This digging is across the creek from the first observation area, and is shown on the area map as “shaft”near dam wall. This spot is little more than a hole in the ground, with a couple of piles of rocks on either side of it. I hope everyone enjoys this story, and happy adventures.                             Photo’s by Shannon.

I truly enjoy my daughters company(Shannon), but don't see enough of her since she moved out. There is a certain type of beauty that exists only in the wild places, and it calls to you. Go and explore! And drag someone with you.
